Scottsdale's Civic Center Is More Than a Building
by Civic Soul
Most Scottsdale residents drive past the Civic Center without stopping. Here's why October is the perfect time to actually go inside — and what's waiting when you do.
Most people know the Scottsdale Civic Center as a parking problem during big events. That's a shame, because the campus at 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. is one of the most genuinely civic pieces of public space in the metro — and October is when it quietly comes back to life.
Start with the Old Town Scottsdale Farmers Market, which returns after its summer hiatus and sets up right on the City Hall surface lot at the Civic Center. It runs Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and draws local growers, food vendors, and the kind of low-key neighborhood crowd that makes you feel like you actually live somewhere with a community. It's an easy two hours on a cool October morning before the heat climbs.
The Civic Center itself sits at the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, which means it's walkable to the neighborhood's best independent galleries and the long-running Scottsdale ArtWalk — a Thursday-night tradition that moves through Old Town's gallery district. ArtWalk is free, unhurried, and a genuine way to meet the artists and gallerists who have chosen to stake out space here.
If you want to stay plugged in to what the city is actually doing, the Scottsdale Community Calendar at scottsdaleaz.gov/events is the most useful single page on the city's website. It aggregates everything from city council meetings to library programs to WestWorld shows. The City of Scottsdale Tourism & Events office at 7506 E. Indian School Road also takes event inquiries at 480-312-7177 if you're trying to find something specific or want to know what's coming up before it gets posted publicly.
For something quieter and more inward, the Scottsdale Center for Spiritual Living is an independent, locally-rooted community worth knowing about if you're looking for contemplative programming outside a traditional church structure.
The civic infrastructure is there. Most of us just need to show up for it.
