Five Phoenix Neighborhood Associations Worth Showing Up To
by Civic Soul
Neighborhood associations are where Phoenix policy actually gets personal — and several of them are genuinely worth your Saturday morning. Here's where civic energy is highest right now.
Most people find out about their neighborhood association the hard way — a developer's notice in the mail, a zoning change they didn't see coming, a park that quietly got defunded. But showing up before the crisis is how neighbors actually shape things.
Phoenix has over 100 registered neighborhood associations, and they vary wildly. Some are dormant. Some are dominated by a single loud voice. But a handful are doing real, sustained civic work that's worth your time.
The Garfield Neighborhood Association, one of the oldest in the city, has been central to the ongoing revitalization of the historic Garfield District just east of downtown. They work closely with the City of Phoenix Historic Preservation Office to protect the neighborhood's character while welcoming new residents. Meetings are open to all, and newcomers are genuinely welcomed.
In central Phoenix, the Melrose Corridor is anchored by the Midtown Phoenix Improvement District and the broader Midtown Community Association, which has pushed hard on walkability, light rail connectivity, and keeping locally-owned businesses viable along 7th Avenue. If you live or work in midtown, this is your people.
Further south, the South Mountain Village Planning Committee is one of the most active of Phoenix's urban village planning committees — a layer of civic infrastructure most Phoenicians don't know exists. These committees feed directly into the Planning Commission and City Council, so what happens in their meetings has real downstream effects on land use.
You can find your registered neighborhood association through the City of Phoenix Neighborhood Services Department, which maintains a full map and contact list online. It costs nothing to show up. It costs a lot not to.
