Faith Communities Doing Real Good in the Valley
by Civic Soul
Some of the most effective social service organizations in Phoenix operate from a faith foundation.
Phoenix's faith communities — representing Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Indigenous spiritual traditions — are among the most active providers of social services in the region. Several operate programs of scale and quality that distinguish them from secular nonprofits.
St. Vincent de Paul of Phoenix, affiliated with the Catholic charitable tradition but serving without regard to religious affiliation, operates one of the largest social service networks in the Southwest: shelter, food, medical care, job training, and housing assistance serving over 100,000 Valley residents annually.
Valley of the Sun United Jewish Community provides social services — elder care, mental health, emergency financial assistance, and refugee resettlement support — to both the Jewish community and the broader Valley population. The refugee resettlement programs are among the most effective in Arizona.
Islamic Social Services of Arizona coordinates Zakat-funded social assistance programs and volunteer networks that serve the Valley's Muslim community and provide broader social service support without religious restriction.
The Phoenix Dream Center operates substance recovery, human trafficking support, and homeless services from an explicitly Christian mission that serves individuals regardless of religious background.
