Five Phoenix Neighborhood Associations Worth Knowing About
by Civic Soul
Neighborhood associations are some of the most underused civic tools in Phoenix — they can block bad development, win park improvements, and get your street repaved. Here's where to start.
Most Phoenix residents have never been to a neighborhood association meeting. That's a shame, because these small, unglamorous groups are often the most direct line between a resident and actual city policy. They're not just for homeowners, and they're not just for complaints. They're where things actually get done.
The Garfield Neighborhood Association, one of the oldest in the city, covers the historic district just east of downtown. Garfield residents have used their organized voice to influence zoning decisions along Van Buren Street and advocate for improvements to Garfield Park. They meet regularly and welcome renters alongside owners.
Over in South Phoenix, the South Mountain Community is anchored by institutions like South Mountain Community College, which hosts civic forums and community education events that serve as an informal gathering point for residents navigating city services. If you live near South Mountain Park — the largest municipal park in the U.S. — your neighborhood association has real sway over how that land is managed.
The Coronado Neighborhood Association in central Phoenix is a good example of what an active group can accomplish. Coronado neighbors have pushed successfully for traffic calming measures and maintained one of the more active neighborhood email lists in the city.
The City of Phoenix Office of Neighborhood Services is the connective tissue between all of these groups and City Hall. They can tell you which association covers your address, help you start one if yours is dormant, and connect you to city staff who actually return calls.
You can find your neighborhood association through the city's online Neighborhood Services portal at phoenix.gov. Show up once. Bring a neighbor. The meeting is probably shorter than you think, and the people there are genuinely glad you came.
