Five Phoenix Neighborhood Associations Worth Actually Showing Up To
by Civic Soul
Neighborhood associations in Phoenix have real power — and most seats at the table are empty. Here's where showing up once a month can actually change something on your street.
Most Phoenix residents don't know their neighborhood association exists. Fewer know it has teeth. But if you've ever wanted a say in what gets built on that empty lot near you, or why the streetlights on your block keep going dark, the neighborhood association is your first and most direct lever.
Phoenix officially recognizes over 125 neighborhood associations through the city's Neighborhood Services Department, which acts as a kind of connector between residents and City Hall. If you've never heard of it, that's partly the point of this piece.
The Coronado Neighborhood Association, centered around the historic Coronado Historic District near 6th Street and McDowell, is one of the more active ones. Meetings draw a mix of longtime homeowners and newer renters, and the group has been vocal about everything from traffic calming on local streets to preservation of mid-century homes.
Over in the Laveen area, the Laveen Village Planning Committee meets regularly and has a direct line into how the city's village planning process works — which matters a lot as southwest Phoenix keeps growing. If you're watching new development creep toward your backyard, this is the room to be in.
For renters and newer arrivals, the Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation operates in the arts district around Roosevelt Street and has become a civic anchor for a neighborhood that changes faster than almost any other in the city. They host community conversations, not just art events.
The Neighborhood Services Department maintains an online village map at phoenix.gov where you can find your specific neighborhood organization. It takes about three minutes to look up, and the next meeting is almost always sooner than you think.
You don't have to run for anything. You just have to show up once and say your name.
