Running Phoenix in the Heat: What You Need to Know
Running in Phoenix summer is possible. Here's what separates those who manage it from those who don't.
Running in Phoenix through summer is not a reasonable comparison to running in most American cities. Temperatures above 110°F, pavement surface temperatures exceeding 150°F, and overnight lows that don't fall below 90°F in July and August create physiological challenges that require genuine adaptation.
The fundamental rule: from late May through September, all outdoor running belongs in the early morning — before 6am ideally, before 7am as a maximum. The temperature difference between 5am and 8am during peak summer can be 15 to 20 degrees.
Hydration protocols for Phoenix summer running are different from every other running context. Carrying water is not optional on runs longer than 30 minutes regardless of the distance.
Desert trail running provides a legitimate summer alternative: higher elevation trail systems in the Tonto National Forest, the White Tank Mountains, and McDowell Sonoran Preserve run 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the valley floor.
Acclimatization happens. Six weeks of consistent early morning running allows the cardiovascular system to adapt. The work is worth it.
