Beyond the Associate's Degree: What Maricopa Colleges Do That Surprises People
Most people think of community college as a stepping stone to a four-year university. But the Maricopa system has quietly become something much more versatile — and Valley residents are only beginning to figure that out.
Most people picture community college as a two-year pit stop on the way to a university diploma. That's a fair picture — but it's incomplete, especially here in the Valley.
The Maricopa Community Colleges system has been expanding in ways that don't get nearly enough attention. The district now offers bachelor's degrees in 11 fields, a fact that still catches longtime residents off guard. If you assumed your options topped out at an associate's degree, that calculus has changed.
The transfer pathway story is also better than most people realize. Phoenix College, Mesa Community College, and Glendale Community College all have guaranteed transfer agreements — through the Arizona General Education Curriculum — with Arizona State University, the University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University. That's not a rumor or a loophole. It's a structured, codified deal. Do the work, meet the GPA, and your credits move with you.
But here's the angle that often gets overlooked entirely: certificates. Maricopa's Fast Track Certificate programs can be completed in as little as a few weeks or six months, geared toward people who need workforce skills now, not in two years. Gateway Community College, for instance, runs a Massage Clinic that serves the public while giving students hands-on clinical hours — a model that benefits the community as directly as it does the students.
Phoenix College, founded in 1920 and one of the oldest community colleges in the country, offers more than 150 degree and certificate programs, including an ABA-approved paralegal studies program that's the only one of its kind at a community college in Arizona.
If you want to explore what's available, the Maricopa Community Colleges website at maricopa.edu is the clearest place to start — the scholarship database alone, with 600-plus options, is worth an hour of your time.
