Lifelong Learning Programs for Seniors in the Valley

Greater Phoenix's senior population — approximately 580,000 residents over 65 in Maricopa County — is the fastest-growing demographic in the metro area. The educational and intellectual programming available to that population has expanded accordingly. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, operating through Arizona State University, is the flagship senior education program in the Valley. OLLI offers non-credit courses on a semester basis with no grades, no homework, and no prerequisites. The curriculum spans art history, science, literature, current events, technology, and wellness. The Phoenix Senior Centers network operates nineteen locations throughout the city with educational programming including digital literacy, health education, and creative arts. The Phoenix Public Library's senior programming includes technology help desks staffed by trained volunteers, large-print and audio book collections, and dedicated book clubs for readers 55 and older. The homebound delivery service brings library materials to seniors who cannot travel independently. Tempe's Lifelong Learning Academy, in partnership with the City of Tempe and ASU, offers one of the more innovative senior education programs in the Valley, including intergenerational courses alongside current ASU students.
