5 Concerts to Check Out This Week (July 13-19)

Every week, we present a curated list of live music in a wide range of genres around the Valley. This week, we feature a retro festival and the grandson of a country music legend.  

July 14
Young the Giant 

This Southern California alt-rock band made its debut in 2004 – a few years after the opening act on its current headlining tour, Cold War Kids, made theirs. Awkward? Not really. While members of Young the Giant did look up to Cold War Kids in their pre-platinum-record days, they now just consider them peers and friends, according to YTG guitarist Eric Cannata. 6:30 p.m. Check website for ticket prices. July 15
Evanescence 

The modern goth rock group has been teasing that it will enter a new era of music this year. Until then, the “Bring Me to Life” band will be performing its hits from over the past two decades. July 16
Struggle Jennings 

Before Jelly Roll began merging hip-hop and country, Struggle Jennings made a name for himself by recording mixtapes that mashed the two wildly different genres. He has shown he can excel at both, going toe-to-toe with Bubba Sparxxx and Yelawolf. And when you’re the grandson of country legend Waylon Jennings, you certainly have a lot of history to live up to. 8 p.m. $30 plus fees. Valley Bar, 130 N. July 17
Totally Tubular Festival

July 19
Starcrawler 

Starcrawler has a more distinctive look than most bands in their peer group. Perhaps it’s because the glam rockers hail from Los Angeles, birthplace of the 80s hair band scene, where a strong image matters. Or it may also have something to do with lead singer Arrow de Wilde. She’s the daughter of Autumn de Wilde, who indie music fans may know from her work photographing Elliott Smith, Florence and the Machine and Jenny Lewis.
