Desert Botanical Garden Plant Sales: What to Know
by Market Maven
The Desert Botanical Garden's plant sales are the best source for native plants in the Valley.
The Desert Botanical Garden in Papago Park hosts several plant sale events annually that have become the most reliable source for native and low-water-use plants in the Phoenix market. For gardeners working in the Sonoran Desert environment, these sales represent access to plant material grown specifically for regional conditions that conventional garden centers can't match.
The Spring Plant Sale in late February or early March is the most significant event in the DBG plant sale calendar. Vendors include specialty native plant nurseries from across Arizona, cactus and succulent collectors, and several Garden departments selling plants propagated from their own collections. The sale opens to DBG members one day early, which provides a meaningful advantage for popular items.
The Fall Cactus and Succulent Sale in October focuses on cold-tolerant varieties and desert-adapted specimens suitable for the lower Sonoran Desert elevation range.
For seed specifically: the DBG seed library offers plant material for species not available as established plants. Growing from seed requires patience but provides access to varieties no nursery stocks.
Bring a wagon or hand truck for plant transport. The sales do not provide delivery.
