Mountain Biking the McDowell Sonoran Preserve
Scottsdale's 30,000-acre desert preserve is world-class mountain bike terrain. Here's how to ride it.
The McDowell Sonoran Preserve covers more than 30,000 acres in northeast Scottsdale — the largest urban preserve in the United States — and its trail network has become a legitimate destination for mountain bikers traveling specifically for the riding.
The Gateway Loop provides a solid 15-mile ride covering the terrain's character without requiring advanced skills. The gravel wash crossings and rocky descents give the loop real substance without punishing newer riders.
The Bell Pass Trail to Taliesin Overlook offers the best views in the preserve and connects several trail segments that reward exploration. Panoramas of the McDowell Mountains from above 3,000 feet are the payoff for the climbing.
Technical riders should seek the Granite Mountain Trail network, which includes exposed rock slabs and ledges requiring real commitment and appropriate tire pressure.
Bike-specific parking at the Gateway and Tom's Thumb trailheads means no conflicts with hikers. The trail surface dries quickly after rain — within 24 hours in most cases.
Most serious riders are on trail by 6am from April through October.
