Beyond the First Semester: How to Squeeze More Out of Community College
Most people know community college as a place to start — but for Scottsdale-area residents, the Maricopa system is quietly one of the most versatile tools for lifelong learning in the Valley.
Here's the question I keep coming back to: at what point did we decide community college was only for people who don't know what they want yet?
I've been spending time looking at what Scottsdale Community College and the broader Maricopa Community Colleges system actually offer to people who are already well into adulthood — and the answer surprised me.
Scottsdale Community College, situated on the tribal land of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, is consistently rated among the top community colleges in the Phoenix metro area. Students describe a well-maintained campus with a genuine sense of community. But what's easy to overlook is how much of the catalog exists for people who aren't chasing a degree at all — workforce certificates, skill-specific courses, fitness access through the SCC Fitness Center, and continuing education credits that don't require you to commit to anything long-term.
The Maricopa Community Colleges system, which SCC is part of, now offers bachelor's degrees in 11 fields — something most people still don't know. If you or someone you know stalled out after an associate's degree, that pathway has quietly opened back up. The system also lists 600-plus scholarships, and Fast Track Certificates that can make you work-ready in as little as a few weeks.
For those with specific professional goals, Phoenix College is worth a look — it holds the only ABA-approved paralegal program in Maricopa County, making it the sole path to an associate's in Paralegal Studies in the area. And Paradise Valley Community College, which has a campus in Scottsdale's Black Mountain area, rounds out the options for northeast Valley residents who want something closer to home.
The practical takeaway: if you haven't revisited what these schools offer since you were 18, it's worth an afternoon on maricopa.edu. The system has grown well past its reputation.
