South Mountain Preserve: Everything You Need for a Perfect Morning
America's largest municipal park is in your backyard. Here's how to use it well.
South Mountain Park and Preserve covers 16,000 acres at the southern edge of Phoenix, making it the largest municipal park in the United States. On paper that's an impressive statistic. On a weekday morning before 8am, when the saguaros are backlit and you haven't seen another person in forty-five minutes, it becomes something more personal than a statistic.
The park's main entrance on Central Avenue is the most direct approach and connects quickly to the developed lookout area and the start of several trails. For a quieter entry, the Beverly Canyon Trailhead on the west side and the Pima Canyon Trailhead on the east both deposit you into the park with significantly less competition for parking.
The National Trail (Trail 100) is the park's spine — 14 miles crossing the entire range from east to west. Most visitors hike sections of it rather than the full traverse. The stretch between Beverly and Pima canyons rewards a point-to-point approach if you can arrange a car shuttle.
Desert Classic Trail (Trail 33) on the west side offers good elevation gain with less exposure than some of the ridge routes. It connects to several loop options that keep you on singletrack for two to three hours.
For sunrise specifically: arrive at the Dobbins Lookout area forty-five minutes before sunrise. The parking lot is free, the view extends across the entire metro to the north, and the colors during those first ten minutes of light are worth the early alarm.
Bring more water than you think you need. Two liters per person for a two-hour hike is a minimum, not a suggestion.
