After our recent “AI Made Simple” session with the Peoria Chamber, one thing became clear:
Most businesses aren’t struggling with access to AI…
They’re struggling with how to actually use it.
The Real Challenge
Right now, there’s no shortage of tools:
ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and dozens more.
The mistake we’re seeing?
Trying to find one tool that does everything.
AI doesn’t work that way.
It’s not a replacement for process.
It’s not a magic fix.
And it won’t solve unclear workflows.
What’s Actually Working
The businesses getting real value from AI are using it in specific ways:
1. Day-to-Day Assistant (where work happens)
- Drafting emails
- Summarizing notes
- Organizing ideas
2. Research & Thinking Layer
- Comparing options
- Breaking down complex topics
- Speeding up decision prep
3. Automation
- Repetitive tasks
- Follow-ups
- Simple workflows
4. Human Decision Layer
- AI supports decisions
- People still make them
Where Things Go Wrong
We’re seeing the same patterns:
- Expecting one tool to replace everything
- No structure around how AI is used
- Jumping between tools without a plan
- No ownership or accountability
That’s where frustration starts.
What This Means for Local Businesses
AI isn’t a product decision.
It’s a business decision.
The companies getting value from AI aren’t chasing tools…
They’re using AI to support how they already operate.
Bottom Line
Before adding another tool, it’s worth asking:
- Where would AI actually save time?
- What processes already exist?
- Who owns the outcome?
Because clarity matters more than capability.
