The Arizona Science Center: A Practical Guide for Adults and Families
Five floors of hands-on exhibits make the Arizona Science Center one of the best science learning destinations in the Southwest.
The Arizona Science Center in downtown Phoenix — located at Civic Space Park on Washington Street — operates as both a children's museum and a serious science institution. The distinction matters for planning: the exhibit floors are designed for broad engagement, but the depth available for adults willing to engage with the content is genuine.
The five permanent exhibit floors cover physical science, life science, forces and motion, space and astronomy, and a dedicated children's section on the lower level. The physical science floor's interactive demonstrations of electrostatics, wave mechanics, and optics are the strongest exhibits in the building — designed for hands-on participation rather than passive reading.
The Dorrance Planetarium on the top floor runs daily shows on astronomy and space science. The digital projection system is one of the better installations in the Southwest, and the show programming changes seasonally. Evening adult programs separate from the daytime family shows occur several times per month.
The IMAX theater adjacent to the main building shows both science documentaries and mainstream films — the science programming is worth prioritizing on the first visit.
Admission is $16 to $20 for adults depending on whether add-ons are included. Arizona residents receive a small discount. Members of the Association of Science and Technology Centers (ASTC) can enter free — check whether your home science museum membership reciprocates.
Best visiting strategy: Tuesday through Thursday mornings, when school groups are present but the building is not at capacity. Weekend afternoons bring the largest crowds, which makes the interactive exhibits less accessible.
