Roosevelt Row Arts District's First Friday monthly arts walk — running from 6pm to 10pm on the first Friday of every month — has grown over fifteen years into one of the largest monthly arts events in the American Southwest. The scale has created tension between the original gallery-focused format and the street festival it has become. For the genuine gallery experience: arrive at 6pm and go directly into the buildings along Roosevelt Street between 3rd and 7th Avenues. The early hour gives access to work and artists before the crowd makes conversation difficult. Reveals Gallery, Bentley Gallery, and Modified Arts are the anchor institutions worth understanding. Modified Arts in particular has operated since 2002 as a combination gallery and music venue that has incubated a significant portion of the Phoenix art community. The street performance, food truck, and vendor component expands significantly after 8pm, when the demographic shifts from art-engaged to social. Neither experience is wrong, but they require different navigation strategies. Third Friday, the less-publicized mid-month event, maintains more of the original First Friday character at a fraction of the crowd.
