Birdwatching in the Valley: Phoenix's Best Hidden Spots

The Sonoran Desert is one of North America's most diverse ecosystems for birds, a fact that Phoenix residents driving past preserved desert on the 101 often fail to appreciate. Over 300 species have been recorded in Maricopa County. Tres Rios Wetlands on the southwest edge of Phoenix is the standout destination — constructed wetlands processing reclaimed water have become an accidental migratory bird magnet. Great blue herons, white-faced ibis, and numerous shorebird species appear seasonally. The boardwalk trail is accessible and free. Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert consistently produces the Valley's best shorebird and waterfowl variety. Arrive at dawn for the best activity. The mounted scope rails at viewing blinds help with distant identification. For desert species specifically: South Mountain's interior supports Gambel's quail, Gila woodpeckers, cactus wrens, roadrunners, and Harris's hawks. The upland areas away from paved roads give the best encounter rates. A proper field guide and binoculars are the only equipment required.
