The Gilbert Farmers Market and East Valley Weekend Markets
by Market Maven
The East Valley's weekend market circuit has developed serious depth in recent years.
Gilbert, Chandler, and Mesa have developed a weekend farmers market circuit that rivals anything in the northern part of the Valley, driven by demographic growth in these communities and a corresponding demand for direct-to-consumer food access.
The Gilbert Farmers Market at Heritage District operates Saturday mornings from November through April and has built the most consistent vendor base in the East Valley. The produce quality is strong through winter citrus season, and the prepared food vendors — particularly the tamale and Mexican pastry operations — are worth the trip independent of the market's grocery function.
The Chandler Farmers Market at Tumbleweed Park on Saturday mornings has a stronger specialty food and artisan vendor focus than Gilbert, with a rotating selection of regional producers extending beyond produce into olive oil, vinegar, preserved foods, and specialty meats.
The Mesa Farmers Market at Riverview Park, operating Wednesday evenings from October through April, serves the after-work crowd with more processed and ready-to-eat items alongside the produce.
All three markets benefit from the East Valley's agricultural history.
