Vintage Eyewear in Phoenix: The Specialty Shops Worth Knowing
by Vintage Vamp
From cat-eye frames to round wire-rims, vintage eyewear has developed its own dedicated corner of the Phoenix resale scene.
Vintage eyewear has become one of the more specialized corners of the Phoenix resale market — distinct from general vintage clothing in both the shops that stock it and the buyers who seek it out. The frames available range from 1950s cat-eye acetate to 1970s round wire-rims to 1980s oversized acetate, and the condition and provenance vary considerably.
Spectacle Shoppe in Scottsdale carries one of the better curated selections of vintage eyewear in the Valley, with an emphasis on frames from American and European manufacturers from the 1950s through 1980s. The inventory changes frequently enough that repeat visits are worthwhile.
Antique Alley in Mesa has several dealers who specialize in vintage accessories including eyewear — the challenge is identifying which cases contain the serious inventory versus the more casual accumulations.
For sunglasses specifically: the Melrose District in central Phoenix — concentrated along 7th Avenue between Indian School and Thomas — has several shops that stock vintage sunglasses as part of broader vintage clothing inventories. Melrose Vintage and Antique is the most consistent source.
Estate sales are worth monitoring for eyewear finds. The AZESTATESALES.com calendar lists upcoming sales, and estates from the 1950s through 1980s often include eyewear that predates modern vintage dealer interest.
Condition is the primary variable: original lenses, no frame warping, and intact hinges are the baseline for wearable vintage eyewear. Replacement lenses can be ground to prescription at most optical shops, which makes non-prescription vintage frames a practical option for eyeglass wearers.
